2018 FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup

The 2018 FIBA 3x3 Africa Cup was the second edition of the African 3x3 basketball event which was held between 9 and 11 November 2018 in Lomé, Togo. This event was staged in the covered outdoor venue of the Stade Omnisport Eyadema de Lomé.[1] All African National Federations were invited to register a team for this event. Teams competed in two qualifiers in Benin and Madagascar to qualify for the event.

Competition format

Twelve teams in men's and women's tournaments were divided into 4 pools of 3 and seeded automatically based on the 3x3 Federation Ranking. Each team plays the other 2 in their respective pools. The top two teams from each pool qualify for the quarter-finals and then play knock-out games all the way to the final. Overall standings (places 5 to 12) and pools standings are determined by the following 3x3 standing rules:[2]

  1. Most wins (or win ratio in case of unequal number of games in inter-pool comparison);
  2. head-to-head confrontation (only taking win/loss into account and applies within a pool only);
  3. Most points scored in average (without considering winning scores of forfeits).
  4. If teams are still tied after those steps, the one(s) with the highest seeding win(s) the tie-breaker.

Qualification

The teams participating in this event were selected by two qualifying tournaments: one in Madagascar, and the other in Benin. Madagascar Qualifier took place on July 28-29 in Antananarivo, Madagascar, and Benin Qualifier took place in Cotonou, Benin on August 16-17. Four men's teams and three women's teams qualified in the Madagascar Qualifier and seven men's teams and eight women's team qualified through Benin Qualifier.[3][4]

Shoot-Out Contest

Format

In the qualifier, each player attempts 10 shots (all worth one point) from the top of the arc, without time limit. Two men and two women who score the most points in the shortest amount of time advance to the final. In case of a tie (same points and time), the tied players shoot again. The four players attempt 18 shots from four different locations: five from the right wing (45° angle from the baseline), five from the top of the arc (same location as qualification phase), five from the left wing (45° from the baseline) and three from the 3x3 logo. Shots from around the arc are worth 1 point, while shots from the 3x3 logo are worth 2 points. In case of a tie (same points and time), the tied players shoot again.[5]

N'Faly Kanoute of Mali won gold and Sara Ageno of Uganda won silver.[6]
