5th Dragoons (Canada)

The 5th Dragoons was a cavalry regiment of the Non-Permanent Active Militia of the Canadian Militia. First founded in 1856 in Cookshire, Quebec as an independent cavalry troop, it became a full regiment in 1877 and served until 1901 when it was Amalgamated with the 6th Duke of Connaught's Royal Canadian Hussars.[1][2][3] Today, both form part of The Royal Canadian Hussars (Montreal).

Lineage

5th Dragoons

  • Raised at Cookshire, PQ on 7 Feb 1856 as The Cookshire Volunteer Militia Troop of Cavalry.[3]
  • Authorised on 30 November 1877 as the 5th Provisional Regiment of Cavalry. Troops at Cookshire, Sherbrooke, Stanstead, Compton and Sutton.[2][1][3]
  • Redesignated in May 1886 as the 5th Regiment of Cavalry.
  • Redesignated in August 1892 as the 5th Dragoons.[3][2][1]
  • Amalgamated on 1 June 1901 with the 6th Duke of Connaught’s Royal Canadian Hussars.[1][2][3]
