Aaraattu (2021 film)

Neyyattinkara Gopante Aaraattu, or simply Aaraattu (transl. Sacred bath), is a 2022 Indian Malayalam-language action drama co-produced and directed by B. Unnikrishnan and written by Udaykrishna. Starring Mohanlal in the lead role, the film also features Shraddha Srinath, Ramachandra Raju, Nedumudi Venu, Siddique, Prabhakar, Vijayaraghavan, Saikumar, Indrans, Malavika Menon, Swasika, and Rachana Narayanankutty in supporting cast. Rahul Raj composed the original songs and background score.

Principal photography began on 23 November 2020 in Palakkad district.[1][2] Filming was concluded in March 2021.The film is now confirmed to be release on 10 February 2022.[3]

Premise

Goparajan / Gopan, a native of Neyyattinkara and a real estate tycoon buys a large piece of land in Chittur for a construction purpose, but on his arrival he learns that the residents are forcefully and unlawfully evicted from their properties by an Andhra based real estate mafia using illegal land acquisition rules with support from the local authorities and government officials.

In May 2020, after the COVID-19 lockdown in India, director B. Unnikrishnan and screenwriter Udaykrishna revealed through their social media pages that they are engaged with the pre-production work of a film, along with cinematographer Jomon T. John, editor Shameer Muhammed, production controller Aroma Mohan and Mohandas.[12] In October, they revealed that the film would feature Mohanlal in the leading role, in which he plays a villager and will have a rural story. Filmng was set to begin in mid-November after Mohanlal has completed filming Drishyam 2.[13] The film marks the first collaboration between Unnikrishnan and Udaykrishna and Mohanlal's fifth time with the former.[14]

Unnikrishnan said that they estimate a budget of ₹18 crore, in which ₹30 lakh is allotted for COVID-19 precautions, and the film would have a larger than usual crew by COVID-19 pandemic standards, which would take 60 days to shoot.[15] Cast and crew agreed to work with a reduced remuneration considering the COVID-19 crisis, Unnikrishnan said that, in a normal scenario the film would have cost ₹30 crore.[16] Title of the film was revealed in November. Aaraattu has both action and comedy elements.[17] The film was produced by the production houses Hippo Prime Motion Pictures, Movie Pay Media's, and RD Illuminations.[18]

Filming

The crew has planned to shoot the film in Palakkad and Hyderabad. Vijay Ulaganath was the cinematographer.[19] The filming was done following the COVID-19 protocols and safety measures.[20] The film began principal photography on 23 November 2020 in Palakkad district.[21] Shraddha Srinath joined the set on the following day, who plays the character of a Revenue Divisional Officer.[1] Varikkasseri Mana served as a location for the film.[22] Some significant portions were shot at Ottapalam and Ooty.[23] The two day shoot at the Palakkad Town railway station costs ₹23.46 lakhs for renting six coaches from Indian Railways.[24] Mohanlal's character drives a vintage black Mercedes-Benz with 2255 on the number plate, a reference to Mohanlal's iconic line from his 1986 film Rajavinte Makan.[25] Mohanlal completed his portion by 11 February 2021, with one day shoot left to be shot in March second week.[26] Composer A. R. Rahman appeared in a song sequence along with Mohanlal in March.[27] It was filmed at Chennai.[28] The entire film was completed in late March 2021.[29]

Music

The original songs and background score to the film were composed by Rahul Raj. Lyrics for songs were written by B. K. Harinarayanan, Rajeev Govindan, Fejo, and Nikesh Chembilode. A. R. Rahman is part of a song.

Release

Reportedly, the film is scheduled to release in theatres on 14 October 2021,[30] but was postponed due to closure of theatres in Kerala because of COVID-19 pandemic in India. The film's distribution right was bought by Zee Network and Zee Studios. The film is now confirmed to hit screens on 10 February 2022.[31]
