Adanga Maru

Subhash is a sincere, determined, new police sub-inspector in Chennai. He resides with his parents and his brother's family and is set to marry his fiancée Anitha. New to his job, he is assisted by Constable Ramadass and SI Chandran. Subhash cannot stand the public's suffering and looks for ways to improve their lives, which often lands him in trouble with his superior, Inspector Muthukaruppan. One day, Subhash argues with a minister's son for refusing to park his car at a checking and putting a barricade in front of his car while taking a U-turn. For that, the minister's son scolds Subhash. That night, as revenge for scolding him, Subhash assaults the minister's son at a bar without any evidence.

One day, Chandran and Subhash are called on to investigate a girl's suspected suicide. On closer investigation, Subhash deduces that she was murdered. While collecting evidence to support this, he comes across Abhijit, whose cell number was active near the scene of the crime. On confronting Abhijit and his friends - Christy, Bhuvanesh, and Deepak - they reveal that they are all bad seeds from politically influential families. Abhijit is the son of a well-known businessman; Bhuvan is the son of the District Collector of Tamil Nadu; Christy is the son of a gold merchant; and Deepak is the son of a well-known scientist.

The boys show Subhash a video of them doing drugs and raping and murdering the girl and many other women. Subhash, enraged, beats them up and locks them in jail. When his superior, a corrupt Joint Commissioner, Saarangan IPS, asks for the proof behind his accusations, he finds out that all the video files were deleted before he unlocked the phone. The four were released due to lack of evidence and the political influence of their parents, and Subhash was suspended. Abhijit and his friends vow revenge, and soon enough, when Subhash goes home, he finds his parents and brother's family dead. Only one of his nieces, Anusha, is left alive. Meanwhile, Saarangan is bribed with an expensive and luxurious Porsche Cayenne SUV car and reports the murder of Subhash's family as a new house fire accident. Discouraged at his powerlessness even though he is a police officer, Subhash resigns and threatens Saarangan to avenge his family's death and will make sure that the four guys die in the hands of their fathers.

First, he kidnaps Bhuvan and locks him in a car filled with silane gas so that if anyone tries to open it, it will catch on fire. Bhuvan's father accidentally opens the car door while searching for his son, and Bhuvan is burned alive in front of his father. Next, Subhash kidnaps Deepak and Christy and keeps them at undisclosed locations. The police tries to arrest Subhash at gunpoint unofficially, but he triggers Muthukaruppan's pistol on purpose, resulting in his arrest and unwanted public attention.

Subhash then reveals to all of them that he kept Christy in a van, and asks him to go to the airport, but Christy's father double-crosses Subhash and asks him to run for help, thinking that Christy is safe when the police and the public are nearby. Before Christy can do so, an autoloaded gun in his bag starts beeping. Christy, assumed to be a terrorist, is brutally shot and killed by the National Security Guards (NSG) force to safeguard the public. After this, Deepak is found to be locked in a glass tank connected to silane gad and sulfuric acid. Subhash and his tech friend expose him as a rapist to the public via an online gaming link. The public can virtually shoot at Deepak to release the chemicals into the tank and eventually kill him. His father hires hackers to stop this, and when Deepak's location is found, he goes there and breaks open the tank to release him, but the chemicals instantly blow up, and he is killed. Meanwhile, Subhash also threatens Saarangan to check on his teenage daughter's safety. Saarangan panics but is relieved when she is found to be safe. Saarangan realizes his mistake and decides to support Subhash to fight for justice for the victims.

Now that only Abhijit left, his father Sanjay, decides to release Subhash from custody and deal with him alone. Subhash tactfully kidnaps Abhijit and has him hanging on a rope. He also threatens to upload the video evidence online and expose their crimes, thereby bringing Sanjay's business empire down. He gives Sanjay a request to either hold on to the rope and save the son, or let go and shut down the laptop instead to protect his reputation. In the end, Sanjay, who is helpless, decides to save his reputation by letting go of the rope and killing his son.

One year later, Subhash becomes a peace-loving IPS officer who murders criminals out of record to serve justice.

In December 2017, Jayam Ravi announced on social media that his 23rd film would be an action-thriller titled Adanga Maru by debutant Karthik Thangavel.[2] Raashi Khanna was announced as female lead, and its marks her second Tamil film after Imaikkaa Nodigal (2018). Stunt choreographer Stun Siva's son, Kevin Kumar, made his debut as a stunt choreographer in this film.[3] Filming completed in October 2018.[4]

Adanga Maru was released on 21 December 2018 to positive reviews. Thinkal Menon of The Times of India rated it 3 out of 5, saying, Adanga Maru has a routine plot, but the treatment makes it fast-paced and interesting.[6] Behindwoods wrote, Adangamaru's fresh screenplay and packaging makes this intense revenge drama, a good watch.[7] The Hindu wrote, thanks to its speedy screenplay, Adanga Maru finishes as a fairly engaging watch.[8] India Today wrote, Debutant director Karthik Thangavel's Adanga Maru starring Jayam Ravi could have been a flawless cop thriller, but it misses the mark by a few inches.[9] The Indian Express wrote A more nuanced, well-thought-out storyline with better CGI could have definitely elevated the revenge saga. Adanga Maru is strictly a one-time watch.[10]
