Afikpo

Afikpo is the second-largest urban area in Ebonyi. Afikpo is made of Afikpo North and Afikpo South. Afikpo South is historically referred to as Edda. The current member of the House of Representatives (9th assembly) representing Afikpo North / Afikpo South federal constituency is Iduma Igariwey Enwo.

Afikpo Igbos are of the Aro stock of the Igbo tribe. Afikpo and Edda were bonafide members of the Aro confederacy. Afikpo were part of the Igbo army took part in the Igbo-Ibibio war in which the Igbos came out victorious. Historically Afikpo people were war mercenaries and warriors.

Tradition and rites

There is a rite of passage for every male child from Afikpo. This entails initiation into the Ogo cult. It is shrouded in secrecy and mystery, as women are not let into the workings of the cult. This confers adulthood to the male child.

Afikpo follow maternal lineagr called ikwo.
