Al-Jawazi massacre

The al-Jawazi massacre is a name given to a massacre committed against the al-Jawazi tribe in the city of Benghazi in the state of Cyrenaica at the time in eastern Ottoman Tripolitania (now Libya), in the year 1816, in which nearly 10,000 people were killed.[1] The site of the massacre was a Turkish castle in the city. It was done in retaliation for the revolution that broke out against the rule of the Qara Manli family and their refusal to pay the imposed Ottoman taxes. It is reported that the Pasha, after claiming to pacify the Jawazi tribe and inviting 45 of its notables and sheikhs to the castle for the purpose of blessing them, as soon as they sat down the Pasha's guard attacked them and slaughtered them; while members of the tribe who were stationed outside the walls of the castle were attacked and large numbers of them were massacred, including women and children.[2]
