Alexander Rumpf (conductor, 1928)

Alexander Rumpf (8. April 1928 at Karlsruhe – 1 December 1980 at Remscheid) was a German conductor.

Life and Work

Alexander Rumpf studied church music and conducting at the Badische Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe and privately with Otto Matzerath.[1]

In 1954 he became a solo coach at the Pforzheim City Theater. In 1959 he completed training with Herbert von Karajan, as his assistant he worked from 1963 to 1964. In 1961 he became first conductor at the Theater des Westens in Berlin. In 1964 he became chief conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Tokyo and in 1966 city music director in Remscheid. In 1971 he became general music director there.
