Apollo Proton Cancer Centre

Apollo Proton Cancer Centre (APCC) in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, a unit under Apollo Hospitals, is a cancer specialty hospital. It is the only proton therapy centre in South East Asia and Middle East.[1][2] APCC is the only cancer hospital in India with Joint Commission International accreditation.[3]

A 54 year old woman from Assam had sustained fracture of her left thigh bone after what was a trivial injury 2 months ago (bedridden) and presented to Apollo hospital immobile on a stretcher. She was further evaluated with a biopsy from the bone and a whole body PET CT, she was diagnosed with metastatic left renal cell carcinoma which is a cancerous lesion of the kidney.[5]

The patient successfully underwent both procedures simultaneously at Apollo Proton Cancer Center in a procedure that lasted around 6 hours. The knee joint containing the tumour was removed with wide margins and replaced with a mega prosthesis. She also underwent laparoscopic radical nephrectomy which was performed through 3 tiny 5mm holes in the abdomen in the same sitting. In view of the local nodal spread in the CT scan, comprehensive nodal clearance was also performed in order to give a better survival rate. After the procedure the patient was mobilized the very next day and made to walk after almost 3 months in plaster.

Robotic oncology program

The state-of-the-art operating theatres are equipped with the Da Vinci Surgical System-Xi, the most advanced platform for minimally invasive surgery available today.[6] The four-armed surgical robotic system is a breakthrough in surgical technology and is a crucial component of our integrated cancer care program. Robot-assisted surgery integrates advanced computer technology with the experience of skilled surgeons. This technology provides the surgeon with a 10x magnified, high definition, 3D-image of the body's intricate anatomy. The controls in the console allow the surgeon to manipulate special surgical instruments that are smaller, as well as more flexible and manoeuvrable than the human hand. The surgeon is thus in complete control of the surgical procedure.

Tamil Nadu Health Minister Thiru. Ma Subramanian visited Apollo Proton Cancer Centre and interacted with International patients on their visit to Chennai for Cancer treatment in the presence of Preetha Reddy, Executive Vice Chairperson, Apollo Hospitals, Harshad Reddy, Director-Operations, Apollo Cancer Centres, among other dignitaries.[7][8]
