Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret is an upcoming comedy-drama film based on the book of the same name by Judy Blume. The film is set to star Abby Ryder Fortson as the title character of Margaret Simon and Rachel McAdams as her mother Barbara. The film is written and directed by Kelly Fermon Craig and is currently under production.

Premise

Sixth grader, Margaret Simon, and her family move from New York City to the suburbs of New Jersey. She has been raised without affiliation to one clear faith, as her parents are Christian and Jewish, and thus goes on a quest to discover her religious identity.

Production

After rejecting several offers to adapt her book in the 49 years since its publication, author Judy Blume sold the film rights to James L. Brooks and Kelly Fremon Craig, with Craig set to write and direct. A studio bidding war over the distribution rights was won by Lionsgate.[1][2]

In February 2021, it was announced that Abby Ryder Fortson would star as the titular Margaret, with Rachel McAdams cast as her mother.[3] Kathy Bates was added to the cast in March.[4] In April, Benny Safdie joined the cast.[5]

Filming began on April 1, 2021 in Charlotte, North Carolina.[6][7] Filming also took place in Concord, North Carolina late in May.[8] On July 1, 2021, Deadline reported that Lionsgate had wrapped production.[9]
