Arthur Francis Basset Hull

Arthur Francis Basset Hull (1862–1945)[1] was an Australian philatelist who signed the Roll of Distinguished Philatelists in 1921. Hull was born on 10 October 1862 in Hobart[2] At age 15 , Hull suffered polio so had to wearing a surgical boot and a walking stick for the rest of his life.[2]

Tasmania

In 1883-89 Hull worked as clerk in the Supreme Court.[2] In 1880s, Hull worked as secretary and treasurer for the Orpheus Club.[2] In 1888 he published a series of short stories called A Strange Experience.[2]

Sydney

On 12 October 1892 Hull moved to Sydney to work as clerk for the General Post Officer.[2] On 1 July 1900, Hull received a transfer to the Department of Public Works as a secretary to labour commissioners.[2] In January 1903 Hull worked in Department of Mines until his retirement in 1921.[2]

Personal life

On 29 April 1891 at Congregational Church , Newtown Hull married Laura Blanche Nisbet.[2] The couple had a son and Nisbet died in 1893.[2] In March 1899 Hull was sued by Bertha Cligny de Boissac for breach of marriage promise.[2] Hull was unable to pay Boissac £500 in damages he was forced to declare bankruptcy.[2] At Annadale on 15 January 1902 , Hull married Caroline Ann Lloyd.[2] In 1912 Hull divorced his second wife Caroline.[2] On 3 December 1926 in Manly he married Diana Farley.[2] Hull died on 22 September 1945 and was cremated with Anglican rites.[2]

Hull worked as secretary and president to Royal Zoological Society of New South Wales from 1917-1919 , 1928–29 and 1938-39.[2] Hull was a member of Taronga Zoological Park Trust from 1926.[2] Hull served as president Royal Australasian Ornithologists' Union in 1919-1920 and the Linnean Society in 1923-1924 also publishing in their journal publications.[2] In 1917-1945, Hull worked with Australia Museum as honorary ornithologist .

Since Childhood , Hull collected stamps and was an honorary fellow of the Royal Philatelic Society London, from 1887. Hull published many articles including Stamps of Tasmania , The Postage Stamps of New South Wales and The Postage Stamps of Queensland.[2]
