Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin
Assoc. Prof. Dato' Arif Perkasa Dr. Mohd Asri bin Zainul Abidin (Jawi: محمد عصري بن زين العابدين; born 1 January 1971), better known as Dr. MAZA, is an Islamic scholar, preacher, writer and lecturer from Malaysia. He is currently serving his second term as Mufti of Perlis since 2 February 2015.[1] His first term had been from 1 November 2006 until 11 November 2008.[2]

Early life and education
Mohd Asri was born on 1 January 1971 at Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia.
Mohd Asri completed his secondary education at Sultan Alam Shah Islamic College. He obtained Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Arabic and Syariah from University of Jordan, Master of Arts (MA) in Islamic Studies from University of Science Malaysia and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Islamic Revealed Knowledge And Heritage from International Islamic University Malaysia. He also was a Fellowship in Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies, University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
Controversies
Racist remarks
Mohd Asri was criticized for a poem that he posted on Facebook about those who "idolised cows" in 2017 which was considered racist by Malaysian social media users.[3][4]
Wahhabism
On September 30, 2009, he asserted that he had never supported the Wahhabism ideology as a general perception of him all this time. On the other hand, he claimed that Wahhabism was never established in Perlis. According to him, the understanding is also not the same as the "Sunnah of Perlis" which is practiced by some residents of Perlis now. "Sunnah of Perlis" is not a Wahhabism, but rather a stream of reform to advance Muslims in various fields.[5]
Personal life
He is already married and have 5 children, namely Talhah, Intisor, Ibtihal, Dihyah and Irwa', respectively.
