Australian Songwriters Association

The Australian Songwriters Association (ASA) was founded in Melbourne in August 1979 by the late Tom Louch (1932-2009) and the late Rudy Brandsma (1944-1983).[1]

The current directors of the ASA are Denny Burgess (Chairman), Alan Gilmour (Vice Chairman, Public Officer, Financial Officer, Online Content Manager and Editor of The Australian Songwriter Magazine), Clare Burgess (Director, Chief Executive Officer and Secretary) and Gary Luck (Director and Manager of Regional Co-ordinators).[2]

The ASA hosts regular songwriting showcases and the Australian Songwriting Association's annual Songwriting Awards, which includes thirteen songwriting categories: Australian, Ballad, Comedy/Novelty, Contemporary Pop/Dance, Country, Folk/Acoustic, Instrumental/World Music, Lyrics, Open, Rock/Indie, Songs for Children, Spiritual and Youth. In addition, there are two ASA industry-nominated awards: APRA/ASA Songwriter of the Year Award and the Rudy Brandsma Award for Songwriting Excellence.

Each year since 2004, the ASA inducts a songwriter into the Australian Songwriters Hall of Fame.[3]
