Bartholomew Dandridge

Bartholomew Dandridge (25 December 1737 – 18 April 1785)[1] was an early American lawyer, politician, jurist, Member of the Virginia House of Burgesses, and planter.

Early life

Dandridge was born in 1737 at Chestnut Grove in New Kent County, Virginia.[2] He was the fourth child and third eldest son of Col. John Dandridge Jr. and his wife Frances Jones Dandridge. His eldest sister was Martha Washington, the first First Lady of the United States.[3]

Marriage

Dandridge married Mary Burbridge, the daughter of Julius King Burbridge, who had owned the 3,407-acre Pamocra estate in New King County. In 1782, Dandridge was charged for the land and was assumed to have received title in fee simple to the property. Both his mother and his mother-in-law lived with him in 1785.[4]

The Danbridges had two sons: John and William. John lived at Pamocra until his death in 1799. William married a widow Susan Baker Armistead, who married David Dorrington after his death.[4]

Career

Dandridge studied law and quickly made an outstanding reputation. He was elected to the Convention in Richmond in 1775. In 1779, Dandridge was appointed to the general court and because of that he was a judge on the first Court of Appeals. He held that position until his death in 1785.[5]

Death

Dandridge and his mother died within several days of one another in April 1785. His sister, Martha Washington was informed of both deaths in the same dispatch. He left property called Rockhock to his wife Mary, to his son John he left land in Doctor's Swamp and a Mill and Grist Mill on Diascund Creek, and he also provided for his mother and mother-in-law in his will.[4]
