Name

The name of the school is an allusion to the blessing which Jacob gave to his son Joseph in the Old Testament book of Genesis, 49:22.[4]

Campus

The current building was purchased from Frisch School in April, 2015 after having been rented from them since 2008.[5] Prior to this, they had been teaching classes in a Congregation Sons of Israel synagogue in Leonia, New Jersey.

History

Ben Porat Yosef was founded in 2001 by Steven Sarao, Rochelle Moche, Solomon and Shirley Bitton, and Enrique Levy as a Sephardic Hebrew primary school. Over time, the school would adopt more Ashkenazi traits as the student body grew. Jessica Kohn and Tomer Ronen were soon hired as founding educator and head of school respectively.[2]

In 2016, Ronen left the school. Steven Lorch was brought in as an interim head of school who was soon replaced by Saul Zucker. Around the same time, the school underwent a large change in administrative staff, seeking to modernize and refurbish the school environment.
