Bentley Bentayga

The Bentley Bentayga is a mid-size, front-engine, all-wheel drive, five-door luxury SUV marketed by Bentley, beginning with model year 2016. Its body is manufactured at the Volkswagen Zwickau-Mosel Plant in Germany, then painted by Paintbox Editions in Banbury, England, and finally assembled at Bentley's factory in Crewe, England.

Bentley's first SUV was previewed as the Bentley EXP 9 F concept car at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The concept car was based upon the Volkswagen Group MLB platform, powered by a 6.0 L W12 engine producing 600 hp (447 kW).[5] The initial design of the EXP 9 F was redesigned to achieve "more traditional SUV proportions and less retro surfacing."[6]

The production version was announced in July 2013. The Bentley EXP 9 F's design proved to be controversial, and it received a mixed response from the automobile press. After some criticism for the design of the EXP 9 F, Bentley announced that it would change the styling for the production versions.

Naming

Bentley officially unveiled the name Bentayga in January 2015.[7] The name comes from Roque Bentayga, an emblematic highland rock situated in Tejeda, Gran Canaria,[8][9] the subtropical Canary Island. The company also drew inspiration from a portmanteau of Bentley and Taiga, the world’s largest transcontinental snow forest, composed of the first four letters of Bentley and an altered spelling of taiga.[10] Bentayga also means "carried interest" in Swahili.[5]

Bentley Bentayga (Bentley Bentayga W12)

The 2016 Bentayga was the first to receive Bentley's new twin-turbo W12 engine. Initially, the W12 was the only engine and it was capable of bypassing 6 cylinders if needed.[14] Bentley claimed the 6.0 L capable of 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 4.0 seconds, 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 4.1 s, and a top speed of 187 mph (301 km/h).[15] The manufacturer self-proclaimed the vehicle to be the world's fastest production SUV in 2016. The Bentayga uses a 48-volt electrical system to control its electrically controlled active anti-roll bar (EWAS), which helps the heavy SUV reduce body roll.[14]

Bentley Bentayga V8

A V8 engine became available in 2018. Bentley claimed the 4.0 L, twin-turbo will have performance figures from 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 4.4 seconds, 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 4.5 s, and a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h).[16] Its combined cycle CO2 emissions are 272 g/km and its fuel consumption is 23.5 mpg.

Bentley Bentayga Diesel

Starting in 2017, a diesel V8 derived from the VW Group diesel V8 was available. This engine is Bentley's first diesel and only offered in the Bentayga. Included are a badge on the front wing and the trapezoid quad exhaust tips. Bentley claims performance of the 4.0 L, twin-turbo diesel of 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 4.6 seconds, 0–100 km/h (0–62 mph) in 4.8 s, and a top speed of 168 mph (270 km/h).[17]

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

A plug-in hybrid model was revealed at the 2018 Geneva Motor Show and went on sale in the UK, Europe, and North America in October 2019. It combines a 3.0 L V6 turbo petrol engine and an electric motor, for a system output of 449 PS (330 kW; 443 hp) and 700 N⋅m (516 lbf⋅ft) of torque. The 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery pack offers a range of 51 km / 31.7 miles as per NEDC testing.

Bentley Bentayga Mulliner

Mulliner is Bentley's internal customisation company, which creates limited-edition options and accessories. Customers are able to customise the cars including custom paint and colours as well as interior hide and carpet colours. An option is the Mulliner Turbillon dashboard clock designed by Swiss watchmaker Breitling. The clock spins 3 times every 15 minutes.[18]

Bentley Bentayga Speed

The Bentley Bentayga Speed is a performance based version of the Bentayga. At its launch in 2019, it became the fastest SUV in the World having a top speed of 190 mph (306 km/h). It is powered by an iconic W12 engine, which has been twin turbocharged. It has the capability to accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.8 seconds.

The exterior design of the Bentayga Speed features a new rear spoiler, sporty lower bodywork and 22 inch wheels while the interior of the standard model contains the Mulliner driving Specification.[19]

Bentley Bentayga V8

The Bentley Bentayga V8 is powered by a 542bhp V8 engine which makes it capable of accelerating from 0 to 100 kph in 4.4 seconds and of attaining a top speed of 180 mph (290 km/h). It has a 770Nm of torque.

This becomes the original version of the Bentley Bentayga as the new generation (except the Bentley Bentayga Speed) no longer has a W12 engine as its predecessor.[23]

Bentley Bentayga Hybrid

The Bentley Bentayga Hybrid is a plug in hybrid vehicle powered by a 443 bhp V6 engine which makes the SUV accelerate from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 5.2 seconds. It has a top speed of 158 mph (254 km/h) and a maximum torque of 700 Nm.

This has a handcrafted interior. This also has a black specification which's front grille, exhausts and other minor features are painted black.[24]

Bentley Bentayga Speed

This is a high performance variant of the Bentley Bentayga. It is powered by a 626 bhp W12 engine which makes it capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 3.8 seconds and having a top speed of 190 mph (310 km/h). It also has a maximum torque of 900 Nm. This is the fastest Bentayga variant in the second generation Bentayga lineup.

It has a sporty exterior design with a new sporty spoiler (longer than the standard model) and sporty lower bodywork. This version has the Mulliner driving Specification as its predecessor.

Bentley Bentayga S

Bentley Bentayga S is another performance based version of the Bentley Bentayga. It has a V8 engine as the Bentayga V8 and delivers the same top speed, acceleration capability, maximum torque and the same power output.[25]

The SUV' s exterior design has been adapted from the Bentayga Speed and has an identically designed extended spoiler and lower bodywork. The interior features the Mulliner driving Specification as in the Bentayga Speed (optional).[26]

Assembly

Originally slated by Volkswagen to be produced at the Volkswagen Bratislava Plant in Slovakia, the factory where all other models based on the platform are produced, an agreement was reached with the British Government for the model to be produced at the Crewe factory.[27] Bentley has invested £800 million in a new facility in Crewe and employed 1,000 new employees to meet the demand for 3,000–4,000 SUVs per year.[28]

Although assembly of the Bentayga was moved to Crewe, initially production of the Bentayga's body shell remained at the Bratislava facility.[29] Body shell production was moved to Volkswagen's Zwickau-Mosel Plant at the end of 2016.

Production

The production Bentayga debuted at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September 2015 as Bentley's first SUV[30][31] – using unibody construction and full-time all-wheel drive as well as Volkswagen Group's bi-turbo W12 engine and MLB platform, the latter shared with the second-generation Audi Q7 and the third-generation Porsche Cayenne, Audi Q8, and Lamborghini Urus.

Available in seating configurations for four, five, or seven, the Bentayga was claimed by the manufacturer as the SUV which has the highest top speed 187 mph (301 km/h) as well as the second most expensive production SUV.

A total of 608 "First Edition" units were manufactured upon introduction, of which 75 were allocated to be sold in the US market.

The original prediction for 2016 was that 3,500 Bentaygas would be sold. When the entire production volume for the year sold out in advance, production was increased and resulted in 5,586 units being sold.[32]

Despite its high price tag, the car was a sales success for Bentley in 2016 and became Bentley's most popular model.[32]

Recall

Some seats had not been secured properly during assembly, and Bentley issued a recall for 378 cars in November 2016.[33]
