On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes the film has a score of 33% based on reviews from 6 critics, with an average rating of 5.2/10.[1]

Ronnie Scheib of Variety wrote "Helmer-scripter Casper Andreas, whose previous credits (Slutty Summer, A Four Letter Word) adhered firmly and flamboyantly to the comedic, seems to have hit his stride with the operatic excesses of melodrama".[2]

Kevin Thomas of the Los Angeles Times called Between Love & Goodbye "a well-made and absorbing cautionary tale".[3]

Writing for The New York Times, Nathan Lee said "[while it is] never credible as a love story, Between Love & Goodbye is viciously, almost hysterically committed to the fracturing and collapse of Marcel and Kyle's love affair".[4]
