Early life

Roberts was born in Victoria, Australia and attended Eltham High School in Eltham, a suburb of Melbourne. He learned boat design though the US-based Westlawn Institute of Marine Technology.[2][3]

Career

Roberts founded a boat yard in Brisbane where he also completed an informal boatbuilding apprenticeship over a period of five years.[3]

Roberts founded Bruce Roberts Yacht Design in 1968 with Andrew Slorach.[2] He opened an office in the United States in 1972.[2][3]

Roberts designed a large number of boats ranging from small trailerable designs to cruisers in excess of 70 feet in length. His range of designs notably included a number of boats based on the Spray, the first boat sailed solo around the world by Joshua Slocum.[3] More than 30,000 boats have been built to his designs.[2]

An avid sailor, Roberts has made cruising voyages in Australia, Canada, Europe, Scandinavia and the United States.[3]
