C. D. Loga National College (Timișoara)

Constantin Diaconovici Loga National College (Romanian: Colegiul Național Constantin Diaconovici Loga) is a high school located at 37 C. D. Loga Boulevard, Timișoara, Romania.

The school building, inaugurated in 1903, was initially used by a state gymnasium. That institution, founded in 1897 under Austria-Hungary, used Hungarian as the language of instruction. In August 1919, when Timișoara came under Romanian administration in the wake of World War I, the city’s first Romanian high school was established in the building. Dedicated to the educator Constantin Diaconovici Loga, it featured eight grades. The first set of graduates took their Matura in 1924. During the interwar period, student societies for literature and mathematics were established, as well as a magazine. The school’s initial designation as a national college came in 1926. A Serbian-language primary section was introduced in 1934; the secondary one followed in 1943, but was closed in 1948.[1]

In 1944, near the close of World War II, the school building was occupied and turned into a hospital by the Red Army. In 1945, following the establishment of a Romanian Communist Party-dominated government, a number of students took part in a spontaneous demonstration in favor of the embattled King Michael. Students and teachers were then arrested; the director and his deputy were sent to the Caracal labor camp for three months. In 1948, after the formal founding of the communist regime, Loga’s name was dropped. Later, for some years, the school was called after Greek communist Nikos Beloyannis. A Hungarian section was opened in 1959, operating for ten years. In 1970, the school was again named after Loga. It was declared a national college in 1999.[1]

The school building is listed as a historic monument by Romania's Ministry of Culture and Religious Affairs.[2] It was designed by Ignác Alpár.[3]
