C. Loganathan

Chelliah Loganathan (19 September 1913 4 May 1981) was a Ceylon Tamil banker and the first Ceylonese general manager of the Bank of Ceylon.

Early life and family

Loganathan was born on 19 September 1913.[1] He was the son of V. Chelliah and Pilawadi Thangamuthu Ammai from Puloly South near Point Pedro in northern Ceylon.[1] He was educated at Victoria College, Chulipuram and Hartley College.[1] He received higher education in Colombo and Bombay.[1]

Loganathan married Thilagavathy Ammai, daughter of C. Sivasithamparam.[1] They had three sons (Sathananthan, Sritharan and Kethesh) and three daughters (Gowri, Vasuki and Lalitha).[1][2]

Career

Loganathan joined Bank of Ceylon in 1939, soon after it was established.[1] He was appointed in 1953 as the first Sri Lankan General Manager and Chief Executive at the young age of 39.[3] He remained in this post until his premature retirement in 1969 .[1]

After his retirement from the bank, he was appointed for two years as Director/ General Manager of the Development Finance Corporation of Ceylon. In the 1970's he was in Washington DC as advisor to the World Bank. During that period he served as an Advisor to the Development Bank of the Philippines and also as a consultant to the UN Asian Institute for Economic Development and Planning.[1]

Later life

Loganathan was a deeply religious person. He was invited to become the President of the Sri Vallipuram Alwar Temple Raja Gopuram building committee.[1] He died on 4 May 1981.[1][4]
