Cal 40

The Cal 40 is a sloop-rigged monohull sailboat designed by Bill Lapworth and made by Jensen Marine from 1963 to about 1969. (correction: they were built until 1971)

The design may be one of the first recreational sailboats designed to plane (correction: they were designed to surf, not plane) while going downwind. It is a popular race boat in California, where the boats were originally built. The Cal 40 is a popular contender in the biannual Transpac race from San Diego (Los Angeles, not San Diego) to Honolulu.[1]
