Carin Boalt

Carin Margareta Boalt (1912 — 1999) was a Swedish professor, scholar, and researcher. She was a professor of civil engineering at Lund University, and in 1964 became the first female professor at a technical university in Sweden.

Life

Carin Boalt was born on April 19, 1912, in Södertälje, Sweden. She was the daughter of landowner Karl Åkerman, and his wife Lydia, née Löfström, and granddaughter of Anders Petter Löfström. She was employed by the Kooperativa Förbundet and was involved in business activities from 1937 to 1939. From 1939 to 1944 she worked at the Statens institut för folkhälsan (National Institute of Public Health) with dietary issues and when Hemmens forskningsinstitut (Hemmens Research Institute; now the Swedish Consumer Agency) started in 1944, she became its head of operations until 1957. From 1958 to 1959, Boalt worked on the research project "1,000 housewives about housework" while studying statistics and sociology. From 1960 to 1961 she worked at the Swedish Institute for Building Research and from 1962 to 1964 she was assistant at the Department of Sociology at Stockholm University. From 1964 to 1977, Carin Boalt was a professor at Lund University. She was married from 1935 to 1957 to Gunnar Boalt, professor of sociology; she was a sister of Brita Åkerman.[1][2][3][4]
