Screening

Chef Flynn was screened at numerous film festivals, including Martha's Vineyard Film Festival,[5] Virginia Film Festival,[6] Sundance,[7] and Berlin Film Festival.[8]

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes the film has an approval rating of 72% based on 29 critics, with an average rating of 6.2/10. The site's critics consensus reads: "Chef Flynn might have cut a little deeper into its subject's story, but this entertaining overview of a precocious talent's rise to acclaim still has enough flavor to satisfy."[9] On Metacritic, Chef Flynn has an above average score of 63 out of a 100 based on 12 critics, indicating "generally favorable reviews".[10]

Glenn Kenny of The New York Times called the film an "engaging documentary",[11] while Chuck Bowen of Slant Magazine said that "[the director] appears to be too protective of his subjects", mentioning also that by doing so "[it] somewhat neuters the drama of the narrative".[12]

Guy Lodge of Variety, while attending its screening at Berlin Film Festival, called Yates's documentary "a slick portrait of [a] 19-year-old culinary whizkid Flynn McGarry, with an aftertaste of unsettled family drama".[13]

John DeFore of The Hollywood Reporter, following its screening at Sundance Film Festival, wrote: "The Food Network crowd will go nuts for the doc[umentary], but beyond the shots of luscious dishes, there's a pretty interesting character study here as well".[14]
