Since 2009, Hayes has also owned Dandelion Catering Company, which, like The Garrison, is based out of Yarmouth's Sparhawk Mill. Initially run out of a community kitchen in Portland, it went full-time in 2013, when they moved to the mill.[2] A third enterprise, Thoroughfare, opened in a separate Yarmouth establishment in February 2021.

Between 2003 and 2012, Hayes was a musician – the guitarist in local band Sidecar Radio.[2]

Career

A cook since 1997, Hayes has formerly worked at the now-defunct Natasha's in Portland, Maine, under chef Jesse Souza. He has also worked at the city's Five Fifty-Five and Standard Baking Company.[2]

Personal life

Hayes is a seventh-generation Mainer, and was brought up by his mother.[3]

He is married to Christina, with whom he has been since 2003 (married since 2008); they have two children. They rekindled their relationship when they both worked at Big Sky Bakery in Portland. She works with Hayes at Dandelion Catering and is general manager at The Garrison.[2][4]

Since 2015, and even during the COVID-19 pandemic, which shut down his businesses for almost eighteen months,[5] Hayes has cooked and delivered Thanksgiving dinners to Maine families in need.[6]
