Come and See (2021 film)

Come and See (Thai: เอหิปัสสิโก; RTGS: ehipatsiko) is a Thai documentary film directed by Nottapon Boonprakob and produced by UnderDoc Film. The film focuses on 2016-2017 controversies surrounding Thai Buddhist monk Dhammajayo, the former abbot of Wat Phra Dhammakaya. In 2019, film was initially screened in Busan, South Korea before officially screened in Thailand in 6 April 2021[1]

The film's name in Thai language comes from a phrase commonly used in Theravada Buddhist chant "ehipassiko", meaning literally "come and see", hence the name.[2]

The film was initially produced by Nottapon Boonprakob as his thesis submitting for master's degree in Social Documentary Film at School of Visual Arts in New York City.[3] The film focuses on conflicts between the controversial Buddhist temple Wat Phra Dhammakaya and the Thai government in 2019 following the accusation of the temple's involvement in stolen properties recipiency and money laundering. The legal process further brought the temple's controversial practices, teachings and unusual wealth to the light of debates.[4]

Some footages used were shot in real time during the temple siege of 2017.[2] The film also includes montage of interviews with monks, followers and ex-followers of Wat Phra Dhammakaya; Buddhism activists Paiboon Nititawan and Mano Laohavanich; and academics Phra Paisal Visalo and Nidhi Eoseewong.

Cinema

The film was selected to be screened at the 24th Busan International Film Festival in 2019.[5] Thai Film Archive screened the film once in 2020.[6] It later came to cinemas in Thailand on 6 April 2021.[1][7]

The film is available on Netflix Thailand since 1 August 2021.[8]
