Commissioner Karachi

The Commissioner Karachi Division is the Divisional Commissioner of the Karachi Division, and is in charge of matters related to Karachi Division. The position holder is a Grade-21 or Grade-20 Officer, usually belonging to the elite Pakistan Administrative Services. The Commissioner Karachi Division reports directly to the Chief Secretary, Sindh and the Chief Minister, Sindh. The position is deemed as one of the most important post in the entire country.[1] [2][3]

The Commissioner Karachi Division is the central authority within the entire Division, with all Deputy Commissioners serving within the jurisdictions of the Division reporting to the Commissioner. Currently there are 7 Districts within the Division, thus 7 Deputy Commissioners report to the Commissioner.

Law and order within the Division does not directly come under the Commissioner, however, it is widely regarded that the Commissioner wields influence over the Additional Inspector General (AIG) Karachi and Director General (DG) Rangers Sindh.[4]

It is generally regarded the Commissioner wields power over all matters in the Division, despite the issue being the prerogative of the relevant Secretary. Thus, the Supreme Court of Pakistan holds the Commissioner accountable for everything within their Division.

As of December 2020, the Commissioner of Karachi is Mr. Navid Ahmed Shaikh an Officer of the Pakistan Administrative Service with elite rank of Grade 21.[5][6][7]
