Conscription in Syria

Conscription in Syria is the mandatory Service for men 18-42 years old[2][5]. It was first introduced in 2008. 300,000 men were drafted to serve in the SAA.

Period of Service

Compulsory service period was reduced from 21 to 18 months in 2011[6]. Every male is forced to serve 18 months in the Syrian Army.

Punishment for evasion

Evading and leaving the army before 18 months[7], desertion is punishable by one to five years imprisonment in peacetime and can result in a prison sentence of 10 years up in wartime.[8]

Recaptured Areas

In Recaptured areas, the part of the population that chose to stay in an area covered by a reconciliation agreement, underwent a legalising one’s status, and males of the age of conscription will also be forced to serve, authorities must and will clarify either they would be allowed to stay in the area, if they disagree, men of conscription age must serve in the military, and those called up for service in the reserve force must complete it.[10], if not they will be imprisoned.
