Courage (2021 film)

Courage (Belarusian: Odwaga) is a 2021 German-Belarusian documentary film produced, written and directed by Aliaksei Paluyan and starring Pavel Haradnizky, Dzianis Tarasenka and Maryna Yakubovich. The film premiered in the Berlinale Special section at the 71st Berlin International Film Festival in March 2021.[1]

Plot

After fifteen years of performance at the Minsk State Theatre, three actors Pavel Haradnizky, Dzianis Tarasenka and Maryna Yakubovich found positions at recently opened Belarus Free Theatre, an underground theatre which thrives despite heavy opposition from the Belarussian government. However, despite the 2020 presidential election, the oppression by the government grows day by day, eventually resorting Dzianis to abandon acting in order to protect his family. The other actors also join the march to fight for truth, risking repression and even death at the hands of the authorities.

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100% based on 5 critics, with an average rating of 0/10.[2]

Jay Weissberg of Variety wrote "Paluyan captures the hopes of a population that spans across gender and generations, and there will always be something uplifting about watching people fight peacefully for freedom".[3] Carlos Aguilar of the Los Angeles Times added "For the sake of immersion, which he achieves via kinetic footage, Paluyan renders the whole a tad obtuse".[4]
