Overview

Through a host of gritty characters and cinematic cutscenes, Crimson Desert tells the story of mercenaries struggling to survive in the vast continent of Pywel. The game's story of struggle takes place in a war-torn, medieval fantasy setting.

Crimson Desert's main character, Macduff, leads a small band of mercenaries, but finds himself beleaguered by the burdens of leadership and painful memories of his past.[2]

Development

The game was originally planned as a prequel to Black Desert Online but the development of the game eventually transformed into something else and the game changed to a single player game set in the same universe.[3] In December 2020, after the release of the trailer at the Game Awards, Pearl Abyss released commentary videos to explain the development of the game and their vision for it.[4] The game uses an upgraded version of Black Desert Online proprietary game engine called BlackSpace Engine.[5][6]

  • December 11, 2019 - An introduction to Crimson Desert's story and in-game screenshots are revealed for the first time on Crimson Desert's official website.[2]
  • December 3, 2020 - Crimson Desert's animated symbol is revealed.[8]
  • December 10, 2020 - Crimson Desert's gameplay trailer makes its world premiere at The Game Awards 2020.[9]
