Daniel O. Griffin

Daniel O. Griffin is an American physician-scientist who is a research scholar in Infectious Diseases and Immunology.[1][2][3]

Education

Griffin received his BA at the University of Colorado. He attended the New York University School of Medicine and then completed his 3-year categorical internal medicine residency at the University of Utah.[2] He obtained a certification in the Business of Medicine from Johns Hopkins Carey Business School, Baltimore MD.

He earned a Ph.D. in Molecular Medicine from the Elmezzi Graduate School of Molecular Medicine, Manhasset, NY in the year 2012, along with research work in the identification of phenotype of the human B1 cell.[4]

In 2014, he completed a Fellowship in Infectious Diseases from North Shore-Long Island Jewish Health System-Hofstra University, Manhasset, NY.[5] and joined the biomedical research community of the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University. He is an Associate Research Scientist in the Department of Biochemistry and Biophysics, Instructor of Clinical Medicine and member of the Division of Infectious Diseases.[6]

Research and career

Griffin's work includes investigating the potential role of human B1 cells and natural antibodies in the development of HIV-associated malignancies.[7] He has a special focus on HIV and Tropical Medicine.[8] His research interests are broad and include studies on Infectious Disease and Immunology, Molecular medicine & Tropical Medicine and many others.

Griffin is an active member of FIMRC, foundation for international medical relief of children.[9]

His current research focuses on HIV-1 and stem cell latency, as well as stem cell gene therapy utilizing retroviral vectors and COVID-19.[10][11]

Awards

  • Ruth and Leonard Litwin Fellowship Award in 2011.[12]
  • Davies Award in 2006 (An international award given by HIMSS, the largest health IT organization in the world).[13]

Science communication

Membership of the Columbia University biomedical research community opened multiple avenues for Griffin to pursue "science communication", including introducing him to Vincent Racaniello[15] and re-connecting with his parasitology professor Dickson Despommier.[16] Since episode 38, Griffin has co-hosted the monthly podcast TWiP- This Week in Parasitism [17] with Racaniello and Despommier. He is also a co-author of the parasitology textbook, Parasitic Diseases.[18]

Since February 2020, just prior to the explosion of SARS-CoV-2 infections in the New York City area, Griffin has been anchoring the clinical updates discussions on Racaniello's weekly podcast TWiV- "This Week in Virology".[19] The popularity of this segment led to Griffin's own TWiV spin-off: "TWiV: COVID-19 Weekly Clinical Updates with Dr. Daniel Griffin".[20]
