Daniel Ruge

Daniel Ruge (May 13, 1917 – August 30, 2005) was an American neurosurgeon who served as Physician to the President under Ronald Reagan from 1981 to 1985.[1]

Ruge was born in Murdock, Nebraska. He received his undergrad degree from North Central College in Naperville, Illinois. He then studied medicine at Northwestern University receiving his doctor of medicine degree there in 1945. He later did advance studies in surgery at Northwestern. It was at Northwestern he began working with Loyal Davis, who was the step-father of Nancy Reagan.[2]

Ruge later became a professor of surgery at Northwertern University Medical School. He also was at variou times chief of staff and chairman of neurosurgery at Northwestern Memorial Medical Center.[3]

In 1976 Ruge relocated to working for the Veterans Adminstration in Maryland. He was serving with the spinal chord injury service when Ronald Reagan appointed him physician to the president. In the latter position he oversaw the treatment of Reagan after he was shot.[4]

He died of a ruptured aortic aneurysm on August 30, 2005, in Denver, Colorado at age 88.[5]
