Daniel Simpson (poet)

Daniel Simpson (born 1952) is an American poet and musician. His work has been published in multiple journals, most notably Prairie Schooner, The Cortland Review, Hampden-Sydney Poetry Review, Passager, the Atlanta Review, and the Louisville Review. Simpson is the author of School for the Blind (2014), his only published collection of poetry.[1]

Early life and education

Daniel Simpson was born in 1952 with his twin brother David in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. Both Simpson and his brother were born blind. He attended a school for the blind in Overbook until the 8th grade. Simpson went on to major in English and Music at Muhlenberg College and Westminster Choir College.

Career

Simpson served as a lyricist in 2019, has been a church musician, computer programmer, and a High School English teacher. After traveling to Paris to study with organist, André Marchal, Simpson has continued to pursue music, as he is still a member of the 140-voice choir, Mendelssohn Club of Philadelphia after 20 years. He is currently the Access Technology Consultant for the Free Library Philadelphia while also working as a technical support specialist for the Library of Congress. Along with Ona Gritz, he is the poetry editor for "Referential Magazine". Simpson also continues to update his blog Inside the Invisible. In regards to his 2014 collection of poems, School for the Blind, that discusses his experiences with blindness, Simpson's poetry disregards the notion that blindness is simply a disability, instead promoting it as an embraced extension of his identity.[1]

Honors and awards

Simpson received a Fellowship in Literature from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. [2]
