David A. Ruiz

David Augustin Ruiz (born 1973)[1] is a United States magistrate judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio who is a nominee to be a United States District Judge of the same court.

Education

Ruiz received his Bachelor of Arts from Ohio State University in 1997 and his Juris Doctor from the Ohio State University Moritz College of Law in 2000.[2]

From 2001 to 2003, Ruiz was worked in private practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. From 2003 to 2010, he worked as a senior attorney at Calfee Halter & Griswold in Cleveland. From 2010 to 2016, he served as an Assistant United States Attorney in the Northern District of Ohio.[2] Prior to Ruiz becoming a United States magistrate judge, he represented multiple clients pro bono through the Cleveland Legal Aid Society.[3]

Ruiz was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge on October 1, 2016.[4] He filled the vacancy left by the retirement of Judge Kenneth S. McHargh on September 30, 2016.[5]

Nomination to district court

On September 30, 2021, President Joe Biden nominated Ruiz to serve as a United States District Judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Ohio. President Biden nominated Ruiz to the seat vacated by Judge Solomon Oliver Jr., who took senior status on February 15, 2021.[6] His nomination is pending before the Senate Judiciary Committee. If confirmed, he would be the first Hispanic U.S. District Court Judge in Ohio.[7]
