Desagati Principality

Desagati refers to a minor principality[1] controlled by a leader, Desai. Desai was the protector of citizens, mediator of society, and also played the roles of a judge, head of the army, and tax collector. More than 120 Desagati principalities existed in North Karnataka between 1565 and 1947 A.D.[2]

Desagati families (also known as Nadagouda, Desai family) are mentioned in inscriptions from the 9th century.[3]

Ingalagi Desagati

Annarao Deshpande (who was a Desai of Ingalagi in present day Bagalkot taluk) had Ingalagi, Kesanur, Bhagavati, Mudapuji and Aanadinni under his desagati.[4]

Nipani Desagati

The origin of Nipani Desagati dates back to 1685 when a Mughal governor granted 14 villages as Inam from Hukeri province which were belonging Parganas of Kab[5]bur, Sollapur, Lat (Khadaklat), Soundalaga etc[6]

Recognition

  • Indian Council of Historical Research sponsored one-day national seminar, conducted on 4 October 2019 on the topic Desagati Principalities of Bombay Karnataka (1565-1947 A.D.) at K.L.E Society’s Arts and Commerce College, Hatalageri Naka, Gadag district, Karnataka (India). The seminar was aimed at collecting information on Desagati families and their contributions from the 16th century to Pre -Independence period.[2][7]
  • University Grants Commission (India) sponsored national seminar was held at V.M.S.R Vastrad Arts, Science and Commerce college at Hunagunda on the topic Contributions of Desagati Families of our state [8]
