Devil's Freedom

Devil's Freedom (Spanish: La Libertad del Diablo) is a 2017 Mexican documentary film written and directed by Everardo González. The film premiered in the Berlinale Special section at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival.[1] Following it, the film was screened at the 15th Morelia International Film Festival,[2] Locarno Film Festival and the Vancouver Latin American Film Festival.[3]

Reception

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100 percent based on 16 critics, with an average rating of 9.7/10.[4]

Jessica Kiang of Variety wrote "Director Everardo Gonzlez's striking aesthetic twist informs a harrowing documentary on Mexican kidnapping culture".[5]

J. R. Jones of Chicago Reader commented "[the film is] hard to watch and harder to forget".[6]

Screen Daily's Allan Hunter was of a similar opinion. His reaction was: "We see expressive eyes and mouths and witness the masks dampened by the flood of tears as the testimonies grow increasingly emotional".[7]

According to Boyd van Hoeij of The Hollywood Reporter, "You don't always need big or complicated ideas to turn what could have been a TV-ready reportage into a richly rewarding cinematic experience".[8]
