DreamUp
DreamUp PBC is a public-benefit corporation that offers space-based educational activities for learners of all ages. DreamUp is a spin-off and sister company of Nanoracks LLC, a private company that develops products and offers services for the commercial utilization of space.

Based in Washington, DC, DreamUp aims to bring space into the classroom and the classroom into space. Inspiring learners globally and engaging them through scientific discoveries in space, DreamUp aims to foster an educational community where space-based research and projects will be available to all learners, regardless of background. DreamUp has supported more than 500 student research payloads launched on SpaceX and Northrop Grumman rockets to the International Space Station via a partnership with Nanoracks and its Space Act Agreement with NASA. DreamUp student payloads have come from 16 countries, 42 U.S. states, more than 20 U.S. universities, and more than 160 congressional districts.
DreamUp also expands access to Space Station research through its DreamKits, hands-on science kits that replicate an experiment performed on the Space Station, as well as DreamCoder, a coding and data science program that allows students to write and send code to the Space Station. DreamUp offers individualized support for space science and engineering education, including custom curriculum writing and educator professional development. DreamUp's educational programs have reached more than 100,000 students worldwide.
In March 2016, Carie Lemack was announced as CEO and Cofounder of DreamUp.[1] Previously, Lemack co-founded Global Survivors Network and Families of September 11, and produced the Academy Award-nominated documentary film, Killing in the Name.
Following Carie Lemack's departure as CEO, Allen Herbert, Jr. was appointed as Interim CEO in August 2019.
DreamUp is part of XO Markets, a holding company for commercial space exploration.
Platforms
International Space Station
DreamUp provides access to facilities on the International Space Station (ISS) that include:
- Nanoracks Mixstix - 2U NanoLab research modules are dedicated to provide housing for up to twenty four individual (Mixstix) allowing all microgravity reactions and materials to be captured for analysis on the International Space Station or returned to Earth via the Cargo Dragon.[2]
- Nanoracks Nanolabs – include both standard space-capable lab racks to provide power and data transfer capabilities. Several standard rack sizes are available to accommodate research in microgravity experiments that require various amounts of rack volume.[3][4]
Student Space Research
DreamUp provides its customers with the opportunity to participate in the myLAUNCH experience, a launch viewing event organized in collaboration with NASA and Nanoracks for missions to the International Space Station via SpaceX, Northrop Grumman, and other launch providers.
Notable DreamUp programs to date:
- Orbital ATK's Cygnus CRS OA-6: DreamUp customers attended the OA-6 launch where DreamUp and Nanoracks flew five payloads through California-based Valley Christian Schools, an experiment from Carmel Christian High School in Matthews, North Carolina, an experiment from the Surya Institute in Indonesia, and an experiment from the SMA Unggul Del School in Indonesia.
- Student Payload Opportunities with Citizen Science (SPOCS) is a microgravity competition developed by NASA's Office of STEM Engagement, DreamUp, and Nanoracks. In 2020, this program solicited proposals from student teams at U.S. institutions of higher learning for Nanoracks Nanolab Space Station experiments related to the topics of bacteria resistance or sustainability. The proposal guidelines also required teams to involve K-12 students as citizen scientists to contribute to the research effort.
- STARward STEM is a program led by the RTI Center for Education Services and funded by DoD STEM which focuses on building STEM skills through transdisciplinary project-based learning (PBL), a teaching method in which students learn from hands-on projects that incorporate knowledge and skills from multiple disciplines. DreamUp space experiments form an important part of this project-based learning initiative, and over the 2021-2022 and 2022-2023 school years, more than 4,600 students and 300 educators will participate in an annual space experiment design challenge. This program will focus on student populations traditionally underrepresented in STEM careers, in a district that serves one of the highest military-connected student populations in the southeastern United States.
