Dreams on Fire (film)

Dreams on Fire is a 2021 Canadian-Japanese dance drama film edited, produced, written and a directorial debut by Philippe McKie.[1] The film was in an Official Selection competition at the 2021 Glasgow[2] and Dublin International Film Festivals and was premiered at Breaker and Be My First section of the Fantasia International Film Festival.[3]

Plot

As her grandfather's strictness started to get on her nerves, young and naïve Yume decides to pursue a street life. There, during Tokyo nightlife she becomes a dancer. By working at various underground clubs and bars of the city, Yume is discovering her style of choreography, which ranges from hip hop to heavy metal as well as J-pop and traditional, all while dodging rude customers and managers.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 100 percent based on 13 critics, with an average rating of 7.50 out of 10.[4]

Lorry Kikta of Film Threat wrote "Dreams on Fire transports you out of your boring living room and into the Tokyo nightlife. For that, I truly enjoy it".[5]

Katie Hogan of Filmhounds have praised the acting by Bambi Naka, calling the film "a vibrant and uplifting story about refusing to give on a dream" and while calling actress herself as "captivating on-screen, especially during her dance sequences".[6]
