History

Dubblestandart is a Dub Reggae band. They are from Vienna, Austria and collaborated with Lee Scratch Perry, Ariup from the Slits and film director David Lynch on their studio album Return From Planet Dub in 2009. They describe their style as Hi-Energy Dub or 21st Century Dub.[1]

The band was founded in 1987 by the original member's Paul Zasky, Robbie Ost, Johnny Heilig and Operator Marek. Today's setup consists of 2 of the original members, Paul Zasky (bass guitar, vocals), Robbie Ost (Dub Mix, studio production), Ali Tersch, who plays the drums since 1993 (Who worked also as a drummer for Supermax) and Herbert Pirker (since 2001) on guitar, who is also the guitar player for House of Riddim, a backing band for international Reggae Artists.

They performed live with their own program, as well as a backing band since 1989 in Europe, Canada, Russia, India or Switzerland. Together with Lee Scratch Perry and Ari Up they performed at New York cities Central Park in 2009[2] and with Lee Perry and Adrian Sherwood at the Geometry Of Now Festival 2017 in Moscow, Russia.[3] Dubblestandart already worked with Lee Scratch Perry 1992 for a couple of live shows in Europe.

Dubblestandart toured through Canada in 2006 and 2008 performing at the Vancouver Folk Music Festival,[4][5] The Vancouver Island Music Festival or The Hillside Festival. 2013 they performed in Goa, India at the Live At The Console festival with MC Dehli Sultanate & Begum X, who are the lead singers of The Ska Vengers.[6]

They have released studio albums and singles of their own material as well as various remixes for several artists like Waldeck or Supermax. Dubblestandart was discovered in 1992 by music journalist Walter Gröbchen and later signed to Gig Records, when they won the DJ competition of the only independent music covering radio show in Austria at that time Die Musicbox.

The album Egalica, released in 1994 was released on the label GiG Records, which was owned by Markus Spiegel, who also signed Falco for his first recordings. In 1996 they were signed by Christoph Moser to the label Hoanzl Tonwaren.[7][8]

Since 2002 Dubblestandart is signed to the German label Echo Beach, which was named after Martha and the Muffins song Echo Beach from 1979. The record label Echo Beach is based in Hamburg, Germany and was founded by Nicolai Beverungen who previously worked for Adrian Sherwood's On-U Sound Records and African Head Charge or Zap Mama.

The album IN DUB was produced by Adrian Sherwood from On-U Sound Records London, UK. The album Return From Planet Dub featured Lee Scratch Perry and Ari Up and film director David Lynch on a dub reggae adaptation of Jean Michel Jarre's Oxygen Part 4.

In 2017 Paul Zasky produced a studio album with Austrian singer-songwriter GuGabriel which was released in early 2019. During the Licht Ins Dunkel/Light Into Darkness NGO Campaign from the Austrian National Broadcasting corporation ORF in 2017, both performed for the president of Austria Dr. Alexander Van De Bellen at his residency, the Vienna Hofburg.

The band produces at GoEast Studios Vienna on mostly original analog Equipment. Robbie Ost, who is the owner, was able to purchase a Solide State Mixing console E 6000 when opening the studio.
