History
e.tv as a broadcaster launched eKasi+,eToonz+, eMovies+ and eAfrica+ as new sister channels as the first of its planned set of TV channels for digital terrestrial television (DTT). e.tv, the SABC and M-Net plan to each roll out their own collections of additional TV channels in South Africa eventually.[1]
The networks will eventually be a part of South Africa's digital terrestrial television system, but began airing over OpenView HD while the launch of DTT is coordinated.[2] as eToonz+ along with eKasi+ (now eExtra), eAfrica+(now defunct) and eMovies+(now eMovies).[3]
In 2017, eExtra was announced on Friday 3 March as a replacement of eKasi+.[4]
In 2021, the eKasi branding was revived as a local programming block on eReality in June and some of the content seen on eExtra was made available eMedia Investments streaming service eVOD including some new content that hasn't aired on the channel.[5]
Programming
eExtra broadcasts mainly telenovelas with a mixture of other programs such as drama series, reality, sitcoms, court shows, lifestyle and movies.
Movies and Series
The channel offers series and movies mainly on weekends, with predominantly international shows.
Kuiertyd
On 1 October 2018, eExtra rolled out an Afrikaans block known as Kuiertyd, which mainly features dubbed Turkish telenovelas and a daily 20:00 news bulletin.
Dramas and Telenovelas
In addition to the Turkish telenovelas, the channel features international telenovelas from Telemundo, Zee TV and Seoul Broadcasting System, dubbed in English.
