Effium

Effium is the largest autonomous Igbo community in southeastern Ebonyi State in Nigeria. Effium is located in the Ohaukwu local government area of Ebonyi State. The indigenous people are known as Uffiom, and the indigenous language is Kuffiom.

The Effium people were originally Efik people, who got overwhelmed by advancing Igbo populations.

The Effium community has over accommodated other tribes from across the country and beyond who immigrated into the community. These settlers include: Amuda, Ezza, and Arochukwu. These tribes are engaged in productive occupations including agriculture and commercial activities.

Economy

The major occupation in Effium is agriculture. Crops include yam, rice, and palm oil.

Demographics

Effium includes seven clans: Uffiacha, Osata, Inyafuo, Watuma, Ogbagere, Wogbale, and Wogwu. These clans are further diversified into sub-clans. Leaders include Omokpo, Omegbu, Enneda, and Ikorofia Eku.

History

The first tribe that settled in Uffium was Arochukwu, followed by Ezza and Amuda and others.

Culture

Effium has many traditional ceremonies that enrich her cultural heritage and values, used to mark the beginning, the first and the second quarter of and the end of the years . Examples are: Inyumafia 1 and 2, kijasetuo, Egwolo and ji-oha. Of which Jioha is a new yam festival that attracts many people from different country to witness its colorful celebration which usually celebrated during August of every year.

Effium shares common boundaries with Izzi, Ngbo, Uli and Igumale.

She has a very large market popularly known as Udebo market or Effium main market among many others where agricultural commodities are purchased and large quantities and transported to other parts of the country and for exportation. It is one of the largest markets in southeastern Nigeria. Other markets in Effium include Inikiri Ubegwu, Inikiri Ohage, and Inikiri Ugede Markets.
