Elin Williams

Elin Williams is a Welsh visually impaired author and blogger and disability activist. She is the founder of My Blurred World blog focusing in educating and motivating visually impaired persons.[1] She won the Teen Blogger Awards 2018 in two categories and was named by the BBC 100 Women as one of the most influential and inspiring 100 women in the world in 2020.[2]

Early life and education

Williams began losing her sight at the age of six when she was diagnosed of degenerative eye condition Retinitis Pigmentosa. At 12 years old, she was pronounced blind/severely sight impaired, but had some remaining vision.[3] After earning her A-Levels, she was employed at the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) for a year before enrolling at the Open University for a degree program in Creative Writing.

Blog

After being registered blind/severely sight impaired, she searched online for teenagers with similar condition and found huge medical reports but could not find people who had a similar story like her. In 2015, she started a blog, My Blurred World writing about music, beauty, fashion and life style but focused more on educating and motivating visually impaired people. The blog creates awareness about disability and accessibility issues.[3] In a media interview, she commented “Sight loss deprives me from being able to see the world like everyone else but it doesn’t deprive me of my skills, my passions or my abilities.”

Awards

In 2018, Williams was named one of the top 100 most influential disabled people in the UK in Shaw Trust DisabilityPower100 list for her online disability advocacy and won the Teen Blogger Awards in two categories in the same year.[4] In 2020, she was named by the BBC 100 Women as one of the most influential and inspiring 100 women in the world.[2]
