Elio Villafranca

Elio Villafranca is a jazz pianist who was born in the Cuban province of Pinar del Rio. Elio would become classically trained in piano, percussion and composition in the music conservatory at the Instituto Superior de Arte in Havana, Cuba.[1] For his work in the album Things I Wanted to do by Chembo Corniel, Elio Villafranca was nominated for Best Latin Jazz Album at the 2010 Grammy Awards[2] and again in 2020 for his album Cinque.[3] In 2014 Elio Villafranca the recipient of the first ever JALC Millennium Swing Award.[4] As a Jazz Professor, Elio teaches at Manhattan School of Music,[5] Temple University[6], as well as at The Juilliard School of Music where he specializes in jazz ensemble.[7]

Throughout his career Elio Villafranca has been awarded many awards including 2018 Downbeat Critic's Poll Rising Stars Keyboard, 2017 Sunshine Award, 2019 Downbeat Critic's Poll Rising Stars Pianist, and more. In 2021 Elio Villafranca became a Guggenheim Fellowship recipient in the field of Music Composition.[8]

In 2020 Elio Villafranca also became a published author after writing the children's book titled Who Ate the Pie?[9]
