Plot
The novel opens with a description of Elminster's attempt to close a fissure that would connect one of the nine hells of Toril: Avernus. The slit is caused by the collision of Elminster with one of the principles of the City of Shade, just back on the material plane from the plane of shadows. During the fight Elminster resorts to the use of the Silver Fire (a gift of Mystra) and the impact with the prince Shadovar (consisting of shadow magic being, like all Shadovar, a shadow himself) caused the Elminster slit and he realized that the only way to close it before whole platoons of devils invaded Toril was to do it on the side of the underworld, if this anches, as would have required all his power, leaving him defenseless, he could declare its end. Elminster actually consumes all his powers and becomes an easy prey for an archdevil outcast named Nergal which the torture and probe the mind, by deleting the memories one by one in order to learn how to use the Silver Fire. The tortures to which he is subjected are terrible and the archmage Elminster of Shadowdale manages to survive only thanks to his incredible strength and the ability of the Fire Silver to heal his wounds. After much suffering and many memories erased Mystra finally realizes that her favorite is in the underworld and decides to venture too but then changes her mind and send in search of Elminster some of her most powerful agents, such as Halaster Blackcloak and The Simbul which can find Elminster and, with his help, to defeat Nergal back home.
