Erin Saoirse Adair

Erin Saoirse Adair (born 1991) is a Canadian folk musician.[1][2]

Career

She moved out of home when she was 16. At the age of 17 she started singing and writing songs. In 2012 she co-founded the feminist folk trio Three Little Birds. She was nominated for the 2012 Canadian Folk Music Awards and The Big Money Shot. She won the CBC National Songwriting Challenge.[3][4]

She studied at Carleton University and had to interrupt her studies for a semester to devote herself to her career.[2][5]

She quickly became very popular in the Ottowa folk scene. In 2014 Adair was able to take third place among the National Artists in the Canadian Searchlight Competition.[6] She made live appearances on various Canadian radio stations.[7]

It gained a lot of attention across Canada. She also made appearances on television, like in Rogers TV.[8]

She covered many songs by the famous folk singer Phil Ochs. For this she was honored by Och's sister, Sonny Ochs, and sometimes appeared at tribute events.[9][10] She also performed at the Mariposa Folk Festival.

Style

Adair was inspired by poets like Walt Whitman, Emily Dickinson and Sylvia Plath, by songwriters like Leonard Cohen and Joni Mitchell and by contemporary composers like Igor Stravinsky and Yann Tiersen. Her biggest inspiration is Phil Ochs.[1]

In her songs, Adair mainly deals with topics related to sexual abuse, alcoholism, physical violence, sexism, racism and expresses criticism of capitalism.[4]

She is known for her covers. She published covers of Phil Ochs, the Internationale and Solidarity Forever. Some of them received tens and hundrets of thousands views. In 2015 there was the album I'm Going To Sing It Now: The Songs Of Phil Ochs. She performed at tribute events for Phil Ochs.[11]
