Final Set

Final Set (French: Cinquième set; literally, Fifth set) is a 2020 French sports drama film written and directed by Quentin Reynaud. The film premiered at the 2020 Angoulême Film Festival[2] and later showed at the Alliance Française French Film Festival at Palace Nova EastEnd and Palace Nova Prospect.[3]

Plot

Following an injury at the 2001 French Open, Thomas Edison, a 37-year-old tennis player is hearing from his doctor sad news about his ability to play due to his aging. Edison have an ageing ligament, joint damage and crippling knee injury, all of which are signs of him not able to come back. While working as a coach and living with Judith Edison, a former tennis player, Edison thinks of coming back. Despite missing an entry into Roland Garros (French Open), he manages to go through the ranks and eventually gets to semi-finals, but he still have a challenger to face - Damien Thosso. His win or loss will determine whether his wife will become a manager or not.

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has an approval rating of 88% based on 8 critics, with an average rating of 7.4/10.[4]

Bradley Gibson of Film Threat wrote "a 37-year old failed tennis prodigy, attempting one final comeback".[5]
