History

Fitchburg High School has existed in some capacity since 1830 when its first schoolhouse was constructed, because of growing enrollment a new building was built in 1869.

In 1937 the longest lasting FHS building was constructed 98 Academy Street. This building served as Fitchburg High until the 1999-2000 school year, when it was converted into a middle school. Today Fitchburg High School is located in Northern Fitchburg near the border with Ashby as it has been since 2000. [3]

The school buildings and fieldhouse received $300,000 in funding from the Green Communities program in 2019.[4]

In 2020 the school received grant money to begin an advanced manufacturing program.[5]

Academics

The school offers 21 Advanced Placement [6] classes and partners with Mount Wachusett Community College and Fitchburg State University for course offerings and college credit programs.[7] Students in the school's Honors Academy receive priority admission to Fitchburg State University.[8]

According to U.S. News and World Report, the student body is half Hispanic, a third White, with smaller percentages of African Americans and Asian students.[9]

Athletics

The school uses the Crocker Field,the primary sport facility for the school, for football, track and field.[10] However there are several sports fields located on the main campus including two soccer fields, a baseball field a field hockey field, a ropes course, and four tennis courts. Fitchburg High School also contains the Doug Grutchfield Field House, which hosts the school's basketball, volleyball and indoor track programs. The school has a longstanding football rivalry with Leominster High School. They played their first game on October 20, 1894. They also played on Thanksgiving in 1899 with the result a 0-0 tie.[11] The rivalry between Fitchburg High and Leominster High is among the oldest in the nation.
