Fundación para el Progreso

The Fundación para el Progreso («Foundation for the Progress», FPP) is a libertarian think tank[3][4] oriented to a massive public. Founded in 2012, its financist is Nicolás Ibáñez Scott[5] whilst its historical icon is the political scientist Axel Kaiser, executive director of the foundation. Among other financists, the FPP has received aports from Quiñenco Group or the Luksic Foundation;[6] since 2020, Ibáñez Scott has decreased his financial contributions to the institution.[7]

The activities of this think tank coincides with the typology of advocacy center[8] made by scholars like James McGann, Diane Stone or Thomas Medvetz, because the FPP has focused on promoting ideas and values within the actors involved in the definition of public affairs[9][10] or, in words of Kaiser, «to create the intellectual weather» in favour of the liberalism[11] like «Timbro or the Institute of Economic Affairs made (...) with Margaret Thatcher».[11] Likewise, according Kaiser, the FPP would be similar to the Cato Institute.[12]

Since 2016 the think tank has gained notoriety through its videos in YouTube. Then, with the re-arrival of Sebastián Piñera to the presidency, according to the media and scholar works,[13][14] the FPP had an influence during the beginnings of Piñera's second government[13][15] (2018–2022)[16][6] through ministers[12] like Gerardo Varela (education), Mauricio Rojas (culture)[17][18] and Roberto Ampuero (foreign affairs).[18] Following the departure of these ministers, the FPP continued being close to the government promoting chats about private pensions system in Croatia[19] or having called to defend the government in the midst of the 2019−20 social crisis (Social Outbreak).[20]
