Georges Stein

Séverin Louis Stein, better known by pseudonym Georges Stein (Paris, 12 February 1864[1] - Geneva, 1917[2]) was a French painter, best known for scenes of Parisian street life.

Biography

Born into a family of Luxembourg origin, Georges Stein is the son[1] of Marc-Séverin, bookbinder, and his wife Barbe Kintziger. He was born and raised in Paris. He was a student of Jules Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger.[3] · [4]

A painter of urban landscapes, he belongs to the generation of artists who depicted the streets of Paris during the Belle Époque, such as Eugène Galien-Laloue, Louis Abel-Truchet or Édouard Cortès.[5] His works are marked by spontaneity, dynamism and movement, giving the viewer the feeling of participating in the scenes observed. Under the influence of Jean Béraud, he worked in particular on the treatment of light to translate the bustle of Parisian life.[6] He populated his paintings with elegant women in a hurry as they went about their daily business.[5] He is known for his views of Paris and London, but also of Melun and Vichy, and in Switzerland of Berne, Lausanne and Geneva.

In 1906, when he had settled in Montigny-sur-Loing[alpha 1] · [7] like many painters attracted by the quality of the landscapes and the light, he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants[8] where he presented eight paintings.

In response to a commission in 1910 by Léon Roubot, director of the Élysée-Palace, Georges Stein produced a set of four large canvases for the decor of this new casino in Vichy.[9] These four monumental views bear witness to the vogue for spas and the leisure activities they offered to society during the Belle Époque: carriage rides, visits to the brasseries, the casino and the racetrack.[5]

He was a member of the Société des artistes français and exhibited at the Salon des artistes français from 1912 to 1914[4] · [10] · ,[11] during which time he lived in Melun.[12] · [13] · [14]

In 2021, the municipality of Melun decided to name a new street in the town after Georges Stein.[15]

Conflict of sources

Sources conflict about Stein's dates of birth and death. The Benezit Dictionary of Artists gives the year of birth as "c. 1870".[18] The auction house Christie's, among others, gives the dates 1855–1930,[19] and the French National Library the dates 1870–1955.[20]

There is also some confusion as to the gender of Stein : some gallery websites describe Stein as a female painter.[21], apparently without evidence or justification.
