History

Georgetown was preceded by Winyah School for whites and Howard School for African Americans until the 1980s.[2][3] Tommy Smith was a coach at Howard and then Georgetown. His teams won two state championships and several students he coached went on to play professionally. He was inducted into the South Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.[4] The Georgetown Library has a collection of yearbooks from the schools. A historical marker commemorates the history of Howard.

In the school year 2018-2019, the NJROTC Battalion housed in Georgetown High School was named the top unit with the Area 6 region. This region includes all of South and North Carolina.
