Giants are a successful and popular baseball team at a regional high school only because their brilliant pitcher is Bobby. Bobby's less known teammate, Adam, doesn't receive the same kind of popularity, and instead, is upset due to being the son of the team's meanest coach. He falls for Caroline, but she, like many others, prefers Bobby over him.

Giants Being Lonely had its premiere in the Horizons strand of the Venice Film Festival on September 1, 2019.[1][2] Following its screening, the film's rights were acquired by Gravitas Ventures for the North American release.[3] In North America, the film was released in theatres on April 6, 2021, by Gravitas Ventures.[4] On March 26, 2021, the official trailer for the film was published.[5] On the day the film was released in theatres, the film was also released on DVD[6] and Blu-ray.[7]

On review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a 60% approval rating based on 20 reviews, with an average ranking of 6.1/10.[8] On Metacritic, Giants Being Lonely have a rank of 54 out of a 100 based on 9 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[9]

Tim Grierson of Screen International wrote "Giants Being Lonely may not add much to the landscape of coming-of-age dramas, yet the preciseness of its impressionism results in a striking atmosphere of hormones and vulnerability".[10]

Nell Minow of RogerEbert.com praised Grear Patterson for his "impressive filmmaking skills".[11]

According to Owen Gleiberman of Variety "The film asks us to indulge and share the privacy of its characters",[12] while TheWrap's William Bibbiani mentions that "[while] the film isn't in a particular rush to get anywhere, and [has] only a few sequences [that] involve prom and drugs and abuse, it's never less than engrossing".[13]

While many critics responded positively to the film, Ben Kenigsberg of The New York Times had some negativity to add. He wrote "Nothing concrete emerges from this haze of oblique editing and barely written scenes, acted by cast members who are not up to making the dialogue sound convincing or filling the voids left in place of their characters".[14] A similar response was also from Jon Frosch of The Hollywood Reporter who criticized the film for containing "[s]tilted writing and acting" which according to him "contribute to an air of studied inscrutability that grows tiresome even over the course of a compact 80 minutes".[15]
