Gora Dhay

Gora Dhay (Hindi: गोरां धाय) (1646–1704) was from the Royal Kingdom of Marwar. She is known for her great sacrifice to safeguard Kingdom's successor Ajit Singh from getting killed by the enemies.[1] The present government of the state of Rajasthan has launched a foster mother scheme by her name to acknowledge her sacrifice and devotion.[2]

Early life

Gora Dhay was born on 4 June 1646 and her maiden name was Gora Tak. She was the wife of Manohar Gopi Gehlot from the Mandor area of Jodhpur, Rajasthan.

History

It is said that Maharaja Ajit Singh was born in 1679 and before that, his father Maharaja Jaswant Singh had died. Due to the absence of a successor to the Royal Kingdom of Marwar, it was annexed by Aurangzeb. Aurangzeb, with an intention to either kill or convert Ajit Singh, put a condition that the upbringing of Ajit Singh will be done at Delhi. Gora Dhay wisely took the custody of Ajit Singh, and replaced him with her own son, who was later killed.[3]
